Merriam-Webster defines authentic two ways that matter here: “true to one’s own personality, spirit, or character” — and “conforming to an original, so as to reproduce its essential features.” Put those together and you have the whole idea behind this site. Being authentic isn’t inventing yourself. It’s conforming to the original — the one you were actually made from.
Definition of authentic — Merriam-Webster Dictionary
- not false or imitation : real, actual an authentic cockney accent
- true to one's own personality, spirit, or character; is sincere and authentic with no pretensions
- a: worthy of acceptance or belief as conforming to or based on fact paints an authentic picture of our society
- b: conforming to an original so as to reproduce essential features an authentic reproduction of a colonial farmhouse
- c: made or done the same way as an original authentic Mexican fare
Scripture names that original a workmanship, not an accident. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). Definitions 3b and 3c above — conforming to an original, made the same way as an original — describe exactly what it means to live as someone made in God’s image instead of a copy of whatever the world is selling this week. That’s not a one-time decision. It’s the daily, imperfect work this whole site is about.
